Madrid names sports centre after Wilfred Agbonavbare

Madrid City Council has approved the motion to name a Sports Center after former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare. The motion moved by Councillor Paco Perez during Wednesday’s plenary session recommended renaming the Alberto Garcia Sports Center at Rua Reguera Tomateros  after the late Agbonavbare.
Wilfred ‘Willy’ Agbonavbare who died on 27th January 2015 at the age of 48 is a cult hero in Vallecas having played for Rayo Vallecano between 1990 and 1996.
He was a member of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and also reached the round of 16 at the United States World Cup in the same year.

Obiano lauds Rojenny’s contributions to sports development

Gov.  Willie  Obiano of  Anambra  has commended Rommy Ezeonwuka, the Proprietor of  Rojenny Tourists and Games Village,  for his contributions to sports development in the state.

Obiano gave  the commendation at the kick off of  the Obiano Unity Cup Football Competition at the Rojenny Stadium, Oba,  on Saturday.

He described the partnership between the foremost sports facility investor and the state government as fruitful and enriching.

Obiano said talents that would be discovered from the Unity Cup championship would make up the core of the state’s  football team under formation.

He said members  of other ethnic groups resident  in the state were involved in the  competition to promote unity

“I want to thank the owner of this facility for the contributions he has made to  sports development in Anambra; it has been wonderful and fruitful.

“The discovered talents from this competition will form the nucleus of the Anambra football team that will be formed next year in partnership with some private sector interests.
We have been doing well in other events like Karate,  Kungfu and Chess nationally and we represented Nigeria in international championships, so it is not just in football alone unlike before,” he said.

In her remarks, Uju Nwogu, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Entrepreneurship, said the place of football as a unifying factor in the country could not be overemphasised.

Nwogu described the competition as a harnessing ground for future national stars and thanked Obiano for approving the championship.

“May I most sincerely thank our host, Ezeonwuka , chief executive of  Rojenny Tourists and Games Village,  for the wonderful work he is doing.

“To our young athletes, I wish you all the best and urge you to compete in fairness, brotherly love and sportsmanship,’’ she said.

Newsmen report that no fewer than  118 football teams  from communities and institutions across Anambra are taking part in the championship.

Awka Etiti from Idemili North defeated Ojoto in Idemili South  3-2 in the thrilling opening encounter.

Newsmen also report that the  organisers have set aside  N1 million, N500,000, N300,000 and N200,000 for the first, second, third and fourth respectively

De Bruyne stunner seals Man City win

A stunning strike from Kevin de Bruyne sealed a 1-0 victory for Manchester City over champions Chelsea.
Pep Guardiola's side dominated possession throughout the game at Stamford Bridge but it took a powerful effort from De Bruyne in the 67th minute to see the visitors take all three points.
Chelsea offered little in terms of a reply, with in-form striker Alvaro Morata substituted with an injury during the first half, and remain in fourth with 12 points.
Man City head back to the top of the Premier League table on goal difference after the win, just ahead of local rivals Manchester United, with both sides level on 19 points.
Chelsea could have taken an early lead when N'Golo Kante's right-wing delivery was just glanced over the crossbar by the rising Morata with less than three minutes on the clock.
Player ratings
Chelsea: Courtois (7), Cahill (6), Christensen (7), Rudiger (7), Azpilizueta (7), Alonso (6), Fabregas (6), Kante (6), Bakayoko (7), Hazard (6), Morata (n/a).
Subs used: Willian (6), Pedro (6), Batshuayi (5).

Man City: Ederson (7), Walker (7), Stones (7), Otamendi (7), Delph (7), Fernandinho (7), Sterling (8), De Bruyne (9), Sane (7), David Silva (8), Jesus (7).

Subs used: Silva (4), Gundogan (n/a), Danilo (n/a).
Man of the match: Kevin de Bruyne.
Both sides could have scored just before the half an hour mark. Cesar Azpilicueta's low drive was collected well by Ederson before Man City went on the break. Raheem Sterling whipped an inviting cross into the box from the right flank, but David Silva could not poke it home at the back post.
Chelsea were forced into a substitution in the 35th minute as Morata appeared to be suffering from a tight hamstring, and was replaced by Willian. But it was City who could have snatched a late first-half goal as De Bruyne delivered a corner, which was powered towards goal by Fernandinho but his header was superbly pushed away by Thibaut Courtois.

Accolade is good, but I’m still a player for future, says Asensio

Cristiano Ronaldo’s praise has delighted Marco Asensio, but the Real Madrid attacking midfielder does not have his team-mate’s Ballon d’Or crown in his sights any time soon.
Asensio agreed terms on a new six-year contract on Thursday that increases his release clause to around €700million and formally signed the deal at a ceremony yesterday.
It continues the 21-year-old’s remarkable rise to prominence, having scored a host of spectacular goals since breaking into Madrid’s first team last season.
Portugal star Ronaldo is the favourite to win another Ballon d’Or crown this year and recently named Asensio as one of his potential successors, but the individual award remains a future goal for the man of the moment, as opposed to an immediate priority.
“Receiving praise from Cristiano Ronaldo is a joy,” said Asesnsio.“But I don’t think about winning the Ballon d’Or because I’m young and everything will happen when it happens.
“I can improve a lot, I have room to improve. I am young, I have to grow every year in many things.”On his new long-term contract, Asensio added: “It is a very important day for me. Renewing my contract with the biggest club in the world is a source of real pride.
“The goal in the Champions League final [was my favourite so far], it’s a dream goal to play a final, to win and to score. It was amazing, very exciting.
“Last season was a great year where I grew a lot and my goals remain the same, winning many titles with Real Madrid. “Zinedine Zidane knows how to deal with me. I have my personal goals and my goal is always to play, but I understand that he has to allocate minutes to others because we are a team, and as a team we won all the titles last year.”
Asensio signed for Madrid in November 2014, but stayed on loan with Mallorca, the club who sold him, for a further year-and-a-half. He then spent the following campaign with Espanyol, before making his mark at the Santiago Bernabeu last season.

Wonderful Chelsea, Man City set London on fire

Conte Challenges Hazard To Sink Free-scoring Guardiola’s Men
Manchester City’s defensive resilience in the absence of the injured Benjamin Mendy faces its first and arguably toughest test when the Premier League leaders clash with champions Chelsea today in London.
The 23-year-old France full-back has been in fine form for City since his £50 million pre-season move from Monaco. But Thursday saw City announce Mendy will undergo surgery in Barcelona after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during last weekend’s victory over Crystal Palace.
Both Man City and Chelsea go into today’s game on the back of midweek Champions League victories over Shakhtar Donetsk and Atletico Madrid respectively.
But Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is unhappy that, while City played at home on Tuesday, his side have a short turnaround after arriving back in London in the early ours of Thursday morning following their success in the Spanish capital.
“I think we are a bit penalised,” said Conte. “Man City is a really strong team. They are scoring a lot of goals (21 in six Premier League games alone), they are in a good moment of form and we have to prepare well (for) this game because it is very important.
“There is the international break (after this weekend),” the Italian added. “My surprise is for this because there is the time (to play the game later).”
Meanwhile, Conte has challenged Eden Hazard to repeat his dazzling performance against Atletico Madrid when Chelsea face title rivals Man City today.
Hazard was in fine form on Wednesday as Chelsea became the first English team to win at Atletico with a 2-1 success in the Champions League.
The 26-year-old was making only his second start of the season in Madrid. Now Hazard is poised for his first Premier League start of the campaign following three substitute appearances after surgery on his ankle.
With Premier League leaders City looking strong, Blues boss Conte wants Hazard to help the champions draw level on points with the leaders at Stamford Bridge.
“If he was able to play one game like the last game against Atletico Madrid it means he’s ready now to play with continuity,” Conte told reporters on Friday.“For us he’s an important player. Last season he had an important season, he played very well, he performed as a top player. I’m very happy for him.”
City’s swaggering start to the season has won plenty of admirers, with Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring side installed as favourites to dethrone Chelsea. While Guardiola is a rival today, that didn’t stop Conte expressing his admiration for the Spaniard’s purist principles.
“I think every coach must have an own style of football. For sure I have great respect for Pep. I think he’s the best,” he said.“Every coach tries always every day to take more information, new ideas and then try to elaborate with your thoughts. I think Pep is a really good coach. I like to watch his game.”
Guardiola will be without Sergio Aguero after the City striker sustained a broken rib a car crash on his day off in Holland on Thursday.

Bale strikes in vital Madrid win

Gareth Bale responded in style to his critics with a fine finish as Real Madrid got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win at Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Borja Mayoral rewarded a bright start by Real with his first Madrid goal before Sociedad's Kevin Rodrigues scored at both ends to give the visitors a 2-1 halftime lead.
And Bale secured the three points as he sped past Rodrigues and dinked the ball over Geronimo Rulli for just his second goal of the season on the hour mark.
Victory moves the European champions up to fourth and within four points of leaders Barcelona.
Without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, as he completed a five-game ban, and injured Karim Benzema, Zinedine Zidane handed 20-year-old Mayoral a shock start up front.
And the Frenchman's faith was rewarded inside 20 minutes when Mayoral swept home a loose ball with a classy finish from close range.
Mayoral's strike meant Madrid have now matched a world record of scoring in 73 consecutive games set by Pele's Santos in the 1960s.
However, the visitors' joy lasted just nine minutes as Rodrigues levelled thanks to a blunder from Keylor Navas.
Rodrigues fired Alvaro Odriozola's cross towards goal on the volley, but the Real keeper should have made a comfortable stop rather than letting the ball slip under his grasp.
The match was then held up as a cameraman had to be stretchered off with his leg heavily strapped as he was injured from fans surging forward from a temporary stand behind the goal Sociedad were defending.
Once the game got back underway, a crazy 60 seconds for Rodrigues swung the match back in Madrid's favour.
The left-back was inches away from bagging a second when his looping effort came back off the bar.
However, Real broke straight up the other end and the unfortunate Rodrigues turned Mayoral's cross into his own net.
Bale had received stinging criticism from the Spanish press and Madrid fans for his underwhelming displays in Ronaldo's absence in recent weeks as Real dropped points at home to Valencia and Levante.
However, he scored for the fifth straight match at Anoeta as his pace took him beyond the Sociedad defence before coolly chipping over the advancing Rulli.
Earlier, Alaves sacked Argentine coach Luis Zubeldia after just four games in charge as they slipped to the bottom of La Liga with a 3-0 defeat at home to Villarreal.
Zubeldia failed to muster a point or even a solitary goal in his brief stint in charge with defeats to Leganes, Barcelona and Celta Vigo also sealing his fate.
By contrast, Sevilla's impressive start to the season continued with victory on the road at Girona to move up to second.
Luis Muriel's first goal for the club since completing a 20 million euro ($24 million) move from Sampdoria was enough for a 1-0 win.
And former Chelsea striker Loic Remy also bagged his first goal for Las Palmas to secure a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Rinaldo Returns For Real Madrid After Serving a Five-Match suspensionj

Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo will return to action against Real Betis on Wednesday after serving a five-match suspension, as the champions look to keep the pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Ronaldo was sent off during the Spanish Super Cup win over Barcelona on August 13 and banned for five matches after pushing the referee, meaning he is yet to feature in the league this season.
The Portuguese hitman struck twice in his only appearance since the incident, a comfortable 3-0 win over Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League last Wednesday.
Youngster Borja Mayoral and Gareth Bale struck for a weakened Madrid on Sunday as they beat Real Sociedad 3-1, but as well as Ronaldo, Marcelo and Toni Kroos are expected to return after suspension and injury respectively.
Despite the impressive display against a previously unbeaten Real Sociedad, Ronaldo's return will be vital for Madrid as they look to take advantage of a soft fixture schedule over the next two months to push rivals Barcelona.
The Catalans, who face Eibar on Tuesday, sit top of the table and are four points ahead of Madrid, in fourth place.
Barcelona were rocked by Ousmane Dembele's injury during their 2-1 win at Getafe on Saturday, with the French winger set to miss around four months with a ruptured hamstring.
Madrid's home clash with Betis marks the start of a run of league fixtures which, on paper, they should win, including home games against Espanyol, Eibar and Las Palmas.
"If we carry on like this we can do a lot of damage," said Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane after his side’s win in the Basque Country.
"We're back on track but we've got to keep going because there's another game on Wednesday."
Mid-table Betis have not beaten Madrid in the league at the Bernabeu in 19 years and only five times in 51 attempts.
If they are to defeat them on Wednesday, they will need experienced winger Joaquin, 36, and summer signing Andres Guardado, 30, to continue their excellent form.
"They are like kids in a school yard, they give it back to the guy that gives it back to them," Betis coach Quique Setien said of the midfielders.
"(Guardado) is a footballer I can't describe, extraordinary. He has enormous quality and an enormous work rate. Just like Joaquin, they are reference points for the team."

EX-Minister Akinyemi : Said Main Reason Why North Wants To Continue Ruling Nigeria

Former Minister of Aviation, Bolaji Akinyemi, has opined that the fear of marginalisation is responsible for the North insistence on holding on to power.
He also noted that most of the problems confronting Nigeria can be resolved if the North embrace restructuring.                                                                                                              Akinyemi added that only President Muhammadu Buhari can solve the crises currently confronting Nigeria.
“People cannot understand or reason properly. You’ve got to accept that in politics, rationality takes a back seat; people refuse to reason rationally when it comes to politics”, he told Vanguard.
“Ethnicity is a negation of rational thinking. I remember once reading something that was meant to be a joke but it wasn’t. It said if you enter a Nigerian plane and you look at the newspapers people are reading, you can tell which part of the country they are from.
“It’s like my mind is made up, so don’t confuse me with facts. So, when a northerner then picks up a newspaper from another part of the country, his first impression is, ‘what do you expect?’ But if he reads the same thing in a newspaper aligned to his region, then he believes it.                                                                                                                   “Same goes for a westerner or an easterner and that is why I have come to the conclusion that, right now, the only person who could solve Nigeria’s problem is Buhari.
“The north doesn’t say it is marginalised but the north has fears that it can be marginalised and that the only way to protect itself, because of the state of economic development, educational development and others, is to control the process and to control the system.
“Look, we must tell each other the truth if, indeed, we want a solution to the Nigerian problem. Since 1966, the constitutions we’ve had in this country have been the constitutions produced under military regimes and the military regimes we’ve had have been dominated by the north; given what happened in the counter-coup of July 1966, they’ve never let go.
“And that is why you’ve had that over weighting of issues into the side of the exclusive list. Because if they control the federal government and they have a constitution that has transferred most of the powers to the federal government, then their fears are being addressed. They are protecting themselves. It’s a rational thing.       “The person, right now, who the north believes in, is Buhari. If Buhari were to tell them that, ‘for the stability of Nigeria, in order for things not to fall apart, in order for us to even protect our gains in the north, the north has to give up certain issues; we must devolve issues, certain subjects, from the exclusive list, concurrent list and, also now, at least reserve some issues for the local governments’, and they would trust him; that he’s not selling them out for political reasons.
“The fact that Atiku Abubakar said it, that Ibrahim Babangida said it, they don’t have the same kind of gravitas in the north as Buhari today. That is why I said it’s only Buhari.”
